Boundedly Rational Dynamic Programming: Some Preliminary Results

چکیده

A key open question in economics is the practical, portable modeling of bounded rationality. In this short note, I report ongoing progress that is more fully developed elsewhere. I present some results from a new model in which the decision-maker builds a simplified representation of the world. The model allows to model boundedly rational dynamic programming in a parsimonious and quite tractable way. I illustrate the approach via a boundedly rational version of the consumption-saving life cycle problem. The consumer can pay attention to the variables such as the interest rate and his income, or replace them, in his mental model, by their average values. Endogenously, the consumer pays little attention to interest rate but pays keen attention to his income. One consequence of this is that Euler equations will be biased, and the intertemporal elasticity of substitution will be biased toward 0, in a manner that is quantitatively

Very preliminary (Please don’t cite) Heterogeneous Expectations, Market Dynamics and Social Welfare

This paper explores the extent to which the lack of rationality of economic agents has affected the economic fluctuations and the social welfare of the U.S. hog market. A group of articles has ascribed the business cycles of the hog market, observed by economists as early as the last century, mainly to the lack of rationality (cobweb expectations) of economic agents. In contrast, others, assumi...

Adaptive and evolutionary mathematical models in economics

This paper provides a short overview of dynamic models, denoted as adaptive or evolutive, recently adopted in economics and social sciences to describe systems with heterogeneous and boundedly rational agents. Some simple mathematical formalizations are shown, and a comparison between this kind of emerging literature and the orthodox main stream paradigm based on the assumption of fully rationa...

Sparse Dynamic Programming and Aggregate Fluctuations

This paper proposes a way to model boundedly rational dynamic programming in a parsimonious and tractable way. Boundedly Rational Dynamic Programming

This paper proposes a way to model boundedly rational dynamic programming in a parsimonious and tractable way. The framework is quite general, and has at its core a behavioral version of the Bellman equation, in which the agent uses a simplified model of the world and the consequences of his actions. It is then applied to some of the canonical models in macroeconomics and finance. In the consum...

Toward Boundedly Rational Analysis

The Bayesian program in cognitive science has been subject to criticism, due in part to puzzles about the role of rationality and approximation. While somewhat sympathetic with these concerns, I propose that a thoroughgoing boundedly rational analysis strategy can answer to some of them. Through simulation results I illustrate the method by showing how one can retrodict recently reported result...
